In today's checklist, I would like to address 9 factors that I consider to be very important to be able to earn good money with a blog in the long term.

In my experience, those who do not pay attention to these basics do not need to ask for a great affiliate program later. That won't turn things around.

There are millions of blogs out there on the web, and thousands of them are added every day. But how many of them make good money?

Now, of course, the majority do not want to earn any money, but blog for private reasons.

But even of the bloggers who would like to earn something, only a fraction manages to generate significant income.

In this checklist, I would like to name the most important factors that ensure that you can earn money with your blog.

However, the following points are of course not a 100% guarantee, but in my experience, these factors represent the only realistic chance of making money with your blog at all.

The 9 Factors To Make Money With Your Blog

#1 Entrepreneurial Attitude

The first question to ask yourself is, "Do I want to make money?"

Sounds like a strange question, but it's not. Many bloggers would like to make money but are not ready to take the necessary steps. If you want to earn money with your blog, you have to be prepared to take the necessary measures beyond the mere wish.

At a certain point, your goal should be clear to make money. However, this should only be a goal and by no means the only motivation for blogging.

Financially successful bloggers bring a mix of fun, passion, perseverance, and business thinking. In my experience, only in this combination will you earn really good money with your blog.

So the first thing you should ask yourself is: "Do I want to earn money?"

 

#2 Vision And Goals

Simply “blogging into the day” is not the basis for the economic success of a blog.

If you don't have a goal in mind, you can't plan the right measures. Therefore you should think about where you want to go with your blog and imagine where you want to be with the blog in 1, 2, or 5 years.

This vision then has to be put into practice step by step. Visions are important, but at the end of the day, you need achievable goals.

 

#3 Profitable Topic

It has to be said very clearly that you cannot make money with every blog, even if it is possible in many subject areas.

But some topics are simply not suitable for making money. Another prerequisite for your blog to bring in money is to find a financially interesting topic.

• Are there any sources of income for the topic of my blog?
  
  
• How many sources of income are there?
  
  
• What are the click prices in AdSense?
  
  
• Are there any SMEs that are fundamentally interested in advertising?
  
  
• Does the target group have desires and needs that they would spend money on?
  
  
• etc.

To be able to earn money with a blog, there must be business potential in the target group. Only if these are potential buyers will you find advertisers, get decent click prices on AdSense, sell your products, etc.

Of course, you should choose the topic according to which topics you are interested in and what you have fun with within the long term. In addition, the topic must also have financial potential.

#4 Target Group

You won't make a lot of money without enough traffic. Therefore, when choosing a topic, you should pay attention to how many people google for certain search terms. This is a good indicator of whether the topic is generating enough interest at all.

The Google AdWords Keyword Tool offers a good option, but professional tools such as Market Samurai are also very suitable for this.

The search volume should be high enough not only to get a lot of readers at the beginning but also to be able to grow later. It makes no sense to give an exact value, as this varies from topic to topic, but it should be at least a few thousand (exact) searches for the main terms per month.

In my experience, it is also very important for the target group that you do not try to address yourself to professionals. Some blogs are successful with it, but there are 3 good reasons for targeting beginners with your blog:

1. There are many more beginners than professionals. This means that the potential readership is much larger.

2. It is much easier to write content for beginners than it is for professionals.

3. Most sources of income work much better for beginners.

Of course, there are exceptions, but there are all of the factors presented here.

#5 Competitor

Another point on this checklist concerns the competition. You should try to have as little direct competition as possible and look for a niche.

That is not easy, admittedly, but it is much easier to get ahead in Google and to find readers if you offer content that is not already available hundreds of times on the Internet.

I would like to briefly explain this on my blogs. With “Self-employed in the net” it was partly a coincidence that I found a niche that didn't exist before. I wanted to write about my experiences as a self-employed person, but of course, I wanted to focus on the internet, as this is my work environment. In 2007 there was hardly any content in this niche on the German web, so I was able to start and establish my blog without great competition.

It was different with my blog Affiliate Marketing Tips. I actively looked around and analyzed which German-language blogs there are about affiliate marketing. In general, there have been relatively few affiliate blogs and almost no one specializes in practical tips for affiliates. That was a niche that I found very attractive.

“Blue Oceans” are the names of markets that are new and where you don't have to face great competition. As a blogger you should at least try to find a good niche that is not that crowded yet, but still worthwhile.

The daily gaming blogs are a negative example. Without offending individual bloggers now, what chance do the 12,848 blogs about console game news have? Here it is important to find a niche in which you specialize and in which you can become a top blog.

#6 Content

Another reason why not everyone can become successful with a blog is simply that not everyone can write, and not everyone likes to write either.

As a blogger you have to have fun writing, otherwise, you can leave it alone. That is one of the most important personal requirements.

In the beginning, it is not so important to be able to write particularly well. Practice makes perfect here. When I remember how difficult it was for me to find the first articles on this blog, I can only tell everyone that it gets easier with time.

You should also find your voice that blog readers will recognize.

Own know-how should be available. You don't write for professionals and therefore you have to be the best expert on your topic, but you have to know more than beginners in the subject. In addition, you should always maintain your know-how and keep your finger on the pulse of your blog topic.

Last but not least, you should blog regularly and reliably.

#7 Marketing

Unfortunately, great articles are no longer enough today. Many companies with great and useful products go bankrupt because they simply haven't reached enough end customers.

Therefore it is important that as a blogger you take the topic of marketing seriously and make it part of your daily “blog work”.

This includes SEO as well as the use of the social web and other marketing channels.

In addition, as a blogger, you don't sit in a glasshouse. You should actively network, make new contacts and just be open. This brings many advantages that contribute both directly and indirectly to financial success.

#8 Analysis

When flying blind, you will never know which measures will bring you closer to your own goals and which will not.

It is therefore important not only to collect statistics but also to evaluate them. Among other things, I use Google Analytics. There is so much more to this tool than just visitor and pageview counts.

But you also have to use other statistics. For example the stats from Google AdSense. As described many times in the past, you will only really earn good money with Google AdSense if you analyze and optimize it.

And that applies to almost all areas of your blog.

 

#9 Develop

Last but not least, in my experience, a successful blog requires further development.

Simply writing articles is not enough, you have to keep up with the times and develop your blog. Stagnation means regression.

New ideas for content, new areas, new sources of income, new tests, new layout, new ways to interact with readers, etc.

The Problem With The Magic Bullet

A problem for many bloggers is usually that many do not know how to start or how to proceed and therefore they do something here and there. This uncoordinated approach doesn't get the blog any further.

Instead, you have to have goals and define them clearly. Then the necessary measures usually arise on their own. This checklist is intended to get you started. If you read through the individual points and then actually apply them, you have a good starting position for your blog.

But the real problem is usually that many bloggers want a ready-made recipe and are not ready to try something. I get a lot of emails from readers who do not start because they are not ready to invest a few hours to find the right path for themselves and to test something. They just want a ready-made template that they just want to copy.

You don't always have to completely reinvent the wheel, but you can't expect everything to be served on a silver platter. Every blog is different and in addition to the basic tips and best practices that you can also find here in the blog, you have to be ready to try out and test for yourself.

When I started self-employed on the net, it was blogging just for the fun of it. When I realized that it was possible to earn money, I set myself goals and, in addition to having fun, developed a professional approach to blogging. I have implemented and observed the points mentioned in the checklist above, otherwise self-employed online would not be what it is today.

Here are the most important questions bloggers should ask themselves:

• Have I found a niche that has relatively little competition?
  
  
• Do I like to write and do I have the know-how to offer content that is worth reading for my target group?
  
  
• Besides writing, will I regularly do something for marketing?
  
  
• Do I analyze the success/failure of my actions and derive optimization measures from this?
  
  
• Will I continue to develop my blog?

If you can answer these questions with yes at the beginning (but also later), the basic requirements for making money with your blog are given.

As you can see, it is not enough to ask for a worthwhile affiliate program so that your blog brings in money.

It is no coincidence that the checklist for a financially successful blog is reminiscent of planning your self-employment. A blog that you want to earn money with is nothing more than a business.
