Tips for Start-Ups on the Internet
Not every self-employment on the internet is the same and not every founder is exactly like the other.
Nevertheless, there are a few basic things that should be available or must be built up for a successful business start-up.
The following list contains 10 things that I can recommend to every business start-up from my experience. The list is based on my experience, but also includes feedback from other founders.
I look forward to your feedback and, of course, also to your additions.
- Idea
The starting point of many business start-ups is a special idea. This can be a new product, a service, or something else that may not yet exist.
It is very advantageous if the business idea has a certain uniqueness, even if you certainly don't have to completely reinvent the wheel.
On the other hand, it is rather not recommended to adopt the idea 1: 1 from the competition. - Business Model
But an idea is only as good as the business model behind it. After all, entrepreneurs want and have to make a living from their work.
It is therefore crucial that you think about how you can earn money with the idea. Ideally, you should test the business model before investing too much time and effort into it.
A business plan is also part of it, even if it is then usually heavily adapted in the implementation. - Attitude
The best idea and the most viable business model are of little use if they cannot be implemented. As a self-employed person in the network, you need the right attitude.
It starts with the preparation for self-employment but becomes even more important after the establishment.
Persistent motivation and thinking like an entrepreneur often make the difference between success and failure. - Basic Commercial Knowledge
Unfortunately, many self-employed people fail, and often it's not even because of the business idea or a lack of orders. Specialist knowledge is usually available.
Instead, many lack the commercial basis, which is just as important to be financially successful.
This applies to things like calculation, cost management, and taxes, among other things. - Financial Cushion
A financial cushion should be available to build up your own business and secure liquidity.
Either you want to earn a full-time income quickly, but first, you have to invest a lot of money (e.g. buying a well-running website ). Or you build something yourself without major investments, but that usually takes time before you can make a living from it. Either way, you should have funds available.
An alternative is to first become self-employed as a part-time job and thus have a full-time income up to your sleeve. - Website/Blog
Even if you can fall back on social media profiles and hosted services as a self-employed person online, your website or blog is still highly recommended.
While you can fall back on range and infrastructure with external platforms, you are also dependent on their “grace”. On your website, you own the content and you can decide for yourself how it should develop.
That's why I think it's important to set up your platforms right from the start, even if it's more work at first. - Experience and Know-How
You don't have to be a top expert to start your own business, but you should have the necessary know-how to do a good job.
It is also very helpful if you have experience in online business because it is often the many small things that cost time and bring success.
Most of the experience is gained during self-employment. - Range
A decisive factor for success as an online founder is reached.
This includes active marketing, activities on different platforms, and intensive networking, which is also important for the self-employed in the home office.
It also helps if you do self-marketing to make a name for yourself in the industry, even if that doesn't suit everyone. - Plan B
No plan works exactly as it was intended on the drawing board.
It is therefore important to react flexibly to current developments and take countermeasures.
Only those who orient themselves towards the market or the customer and have a plan B in their pocket will be able to improve their own business. - Endurance
Finally, it should be clear that you won't get rich overnight. Unfortunately, many founders have wrong expectations here.
The first few years are often the most difficult, which is why it's important to stay motivated and persevere.
You can do this with motivating goals and when you enjoy your work.
Conclusion
Even if these 10 points are not a knockout list, experience has shown that they are often very important factors to be successful online.
Therefore, one should not underestimate these points and incorporate them into the planning and preliminary considerations.
I will soon publish another article in which I will go into the things that you don't need as an online founder.
