The internet has changed the world of work and what was unthinkable a few years ago and only known as a curiosity from the USA is now a reality in Germany as well.
There are many bloggers who can make a living from blogging.
But how easy is it and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
There are also tips on how to make blogging a profession.

Basically the answer is “yes”, but of course there is also a big “but” here. Everyone who asks this question should be aware of the consequences of the question.
If you want to earn money with a blog and even want to make a living from it, you have to start blogging with a corresponding business attitude.
However, if you approach it like a hobby blogger but want to earn like a professional, you don't need to be surprised if it doesn't work out.
And of course it should also be clear that not everyone who starts a blog can make a living from it.
Thousands of blogs are created every day and it takes a lot of work, commitment and know-how to be one of the (relatively) few who earn enough to live with it.
In the graphic on the right you can see an evaluation by problogger.net, which is older, but clearly shows that most people earn rather little.
The majority earn pocket money, which is certainly not enough to live on. But there are also bloggers who can live well to very well off it.
A while ago I myself carried out a survey of 93 bloggers here on the blog.
The picture was similar there too. The majority of bloggers earned rather little, but a certain part can make a living from it.

A big hurdle to making money with blogs is the blogosphere itself.
Blogs are originally pure hobby projects and when the blogosphere came into being, it was mainly about values, ideals, free opinion, etc.
And that is still largely the case today. Most blogs are non-commercial.
The headwind that bloggers face when they start to incorporate advertising, AdSense or affiliate links is correspondingly strong.
Of course, it also depends a lot on the topic and the community there. But for many, the motto “make money blogging” seems to be banned.
I think, however, that it is very possible that the blogosphere will continue to exist, even if some bloggers want to make money. You should also be aware that, for example, I use WordPress and the basic structure of “Self-employed on the Internet” corresponds to a blog.
But I see SiN more as an information magazine with community features. In this respect, I only see myself to a limited extent as part of the blogosphere. In my experience, however, this headwind has already subsided. A few years ago there were a lot more critics.
Pros and Cons
What are the advantages and disadvantages of not only making money with a blog, but also wanting to make a living from it.
Advantages
- You are responsible for everything yourself and can implement your vision 100%.
- The web still offers many great opportunities to build a successful blog, even if some might see it differently.
- A high-quality blog is a good and stable source of income that is also reliable in the long term compared to other online earning methods.
- A blog is always strongly connected to the blogger, so that it is not so easy for the competition to offer an alternative. Especially since regular readers are a big advantage.
- There are many different sources of income for a blog, so that you can build a relatively secure and stable income.
Disadvantage
Not everyone sees blogs as an ideal foundation for business. And blogs have drawbacks.
- It takes a long time to build a blog to the point where you can make a living from it.
- It is quite easy for the competition to copy a blog, but when it is certainly not that easy to catch up.
- Blog readers, especially regular readers, have to be monetized very carefully and subtly.
- You're in the line of fire yourself as a blogger.
- Selling a blog is not that easy as the blogger is heavily connected to it.
Of course, there are other advantages and disadvantages as well. It should have become clear that it is certainly not a quick route to wealth.
Are There Any Easier Ways?
I find this question borderline. When I hear someone ask whether there is an “easier” way, it usually shows me that there is no passion there, but that someone just wants to earn money as quickly as possible with as little effort as possible.
I would say that there is no reliable and long-term stable path that is simpler than others.
Instead, it depends very much on what qualities and interests you bring with you. For those who do not like to write, there are certainly “easier” ways to earn money than blogging.
For my part, I like to write and a lot. For myself I would describe blogging as “easy” and other business models on the web as more difficult. For me personally, mind you.
That is why it is important to find the right path for yourself. But none of them are really easy.
Tips To Make A Living From Blogging
From my own experience, I can say that you don't get rich overnight with a blog.
But in the long term you can also make a living from a blog. Here are a few personal tips:
- You should have a passion for the topic you want to blog about. Otherwise you won't stand out from your niche and eventually lose interest.
- A blog lives from high quality and regular content. You need to be patient and enjoy writing.
- The blog topic should have good opportunities to monetize it. If there are hardly any companies, no affiliate programs and only a few 5 cent AdSense ads on the topic, it will be difficult to make a living from it.
- One shouldn't think primarily as money in order to make money. Instead, it is important to think about the readers and how to offer them high-quality content that they would otherwise not find.
- Without marketing, nothing works with blogging either. That is why you should always raise the bar and make use of all online opportunities such as social networks, etc.
- And you shouldn't forget that as a self-employed blogger you also have to pay health insurance, possibly pension insurance, income tax, etc.

Can you make a living from blogging? Yes.
Is it easy? No.
But it's also not easy to start a successful online store, and neither is it easy to make a living off affiliate websites right away.
But if the writing suits you and if you have a favorite topic that can also be easily monetized, with sufficient commitment and a lot of perseverance, you have a good chance of being able to make a living from it.
