How Important Is It to Make Money While Blogging? - There are quite different opinions on this, and the topic of the last Webmaster Friday also fits in with it. It was about the topic “ money money money !!! How important is making money while blogging? ”

Webmaster Friday is over now, but I still want to write an article on this topic.

What Defines a Blogger?

The topic of making money with blogs keeps boiling up.

I'm not sure where it's coming from, but it seems that now and then bloggers feel called to point their index finger at others.

But what defines a blogger? What is behind this name and what can you do as a blogger and what not?

According to Wikipedia, it is "the author of posts in a blog (weblog)".

Okay, that's still very imprecise. Let's take a look at the definition of a blog (weblog). This is much more extensive.

A blog is defined as an “endless” chronologically sorted list of entries that are mostly self-centered. A blog is mainly used “to present aspects of one's own life and opinions on specific topics” (quote from Wikipedia). And of course via the comments also for the exchange of opinions and for discussion.

There is also a definition of the characteristics of bloggers on the same Wikipedia page. Many studies were evaluated and one found, for example, that 3/4 of the blogs are personal and 1/4 are non-personal. The latter group is therefore not primarily self-related but provides information, news, etc.

I would classify my blogs in this second group. Of course, I also let in personal information from time to time, and, as the sole author, I also shape my blogs, but overall I refer to my blogs as specialist blogs.

Unfortunately, Wikipedia does not provide a statement about “earning money with blogs” or statistics.

But I am sure that the discussion about making money stems mainly from a different definition of the term “blogger”.

Profession and Calling

Many bloggers are committed to a scene and an idea. You blog because you want to oppose the big mass media and because there is still real freedom of expression and independent reporting on the web.

And I can understand that. I wrote my thesis on the daily newspaper and the web and I follow the print landscape quite intensively. And what has happened over the past few years is terrifying. The pressure to make money increases and the quality decreases. And, of course, the significantly lower circulation rates exacerbate the problem.

And that's why I'm very happy that there is now pronounced citizen journalism in the form of blogs. Of course, there is also a lot of rubbish on the web, but as a responsible citizen, you have the option of choosing. Something that classic journalists like to consider their privilege.

But what annoys me is that these tolerant and idealistic bloggers talk a lot about freedom of expression and decision-making, but then criticize other blog definitions and approaches.

While such political blogs certainly represent a calling and the author's blog from a secure professional relationship or as a student without any financial ulterior motives, the situation is different with the self-employed, for example. It's more about a job than a calling.

The Content Counts, Not the Technology

I find it quite strange anyway that bloggers in particular are not allowed to earn money. Nobody points a finger at normal website operators.

The most important thing is the content and not the technology. Just because I use WordPress, which, by the way, is a pretty normal CMS, doesn't mean I am automatically a classic blogger.

The other way around, I can also publish idealistic content on a normal website and not believe in making money.

That's why I'm now a little reluctant to call myself a blogger. Because I'm a writer/writer who just likes to publish content on a certain topic.

The fact that I also try to earn money because, as a self-employed person, I always have to see that money ends up in my account, increases my reluctance to feel part of the blogosphere.

The term “blogosphere” can certainly be defined in different ways. I don't see it and rather think that a certain elitist group calls itself that.

For me, it is just that the blog is not that important on a technical basis. I like the way a blog works and that's why I chose WordPress as software and not a classic CMS, but that doesn't mean that I will stick to the blog format forever. Who knows what opportunities and trends there will be for publishing on the Internet in 5 years.

To get back to the real question of Webmaster Friday.

Everyone has to decide for themselves. If someone wants to make money from their blog, then that is just as legitimate as if someone just wants to post content.

Everyone has to be able to look themselves in the mirror in the morning and that means that everyone is responsible for what they do and what not on the web.

In any case, I'm not one of those moralists who demonize money-making blogs. By the way, these are partly the same people who denounce Zensurulla (whom I don't like either), but who would then prefer to have certain types of blogs banned themselves.

Each reader has the opportunity to decide for himself whether he should avoid a blog or visit it again. We don't need internet police for this (although everything has to stay within the legally permitted framework, of course.)

Earning money while blogging is important to me. However, the focus is on having fun. Again and again, I think about how far I want to go and again and again I realize very clearly what I would not do just to earn more money. I follow the American market very closely and see a lot of great things there, but also a lot of things that I would never do on my blog.

But as a self-employed person who doesn't get his fixed salary on the same day every month, you see certain things a bit differently. And if you can combine the fun of writing/blogging with the fact that you earn more or less, I think that's fine.

Nice People

As much as it sometimes upsets me that such topics come up, I also have to say clearly that the web is very, very friendly.

There are so many nice people I have met on the web in the last few years and 99% are extremely relaxed about the topic of “making money with blogs”.

So, despite this article, it is certainly not the case that there is now a big fight or a camp battle on the web.

There will always be different views and unfortunately, there will always be people who argue below the belt or pose as moral apostles. But overall, the web is a great “space” to communicate, write, discuss, and yes, also to make money.
