My Top 10 Tips for Shy Founders
Of course, these 10 tips are not a panacea for shyness and they don't have to be. Shyness is neither a disease nor a broken leg. You can still be successful. However, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Love What You Do
The first tip aims to ensure that you can stand 100 percent behind what you do in your self-employment. If you put all your heart into it, you will have a lot less trouble talking to others about it.
Use Technology
Instead of talking to other people directly, you can use a lot of technology these days. Be it websites, social networks, forums, chats, or whatever. Technology helps to get in touch without constantly having to look new people in the eye.
Hire Employees
If you are simply not the person who likes to be the center of attention in the long term, you can leave this to employees. After all, there is a division of tasks in everything, why not also be in contact with other people?
Meet Up with Others in Person
It is particularly difficult for shy people to make contacts at parties, conferences, or similar events. Instead, it often works much better to meet with just one person. In a 1: 1 conversation, most are much more relaxed and open.
Present and Not Talk
Many shy people find it particularly difficult to talk in front of larger groups. I know that myself from my studies. Thanks to modern technology, great presentations are no longer a problem and so you have to talk less and can show more.
Choose the Right Marketing Channels
Cold calling over the phone may work, but it's not something for shy people. Lectures or webinars are also more of a deterrent. Instead, you should use marketing channels that suit you better. Blogging, social media, newsletters *, advertising, direct marketing, and the like.
Go Into Online Business
In general, I would advise shy founders to give online businesses a try. Sure you have to be interested and have the know-how, but whoever runs websites doesn't have to be in the limelight, attract customers, or the like.
Don't Think Too Much
Shyness is mostly self-made and a matter of the mind. You imagine what can go wrong and what others might think of you. That is exactly where the problem lies. it's not that easy, but you should just think less about the “what if” and just do it.
Leave Your Comfort Zone
The previous tips were more intended to show shy founders ways in which they can still be successful. But it's also a good idea to do something about shyness. Do something that you haven't dared to do before. Go to a regulars' table, record a video, speak at a small conference. Push your limits.
Accept Yourself for Who You are
Last but not least, you must accept yourself for who you are. You shouldn't bend and every person has strengths. Focus on it and try not to be perfect. Neither are the others, even if they pretend to be.
Are you shy too?
Then write in the comments how you deal with it and what experiences you were able to gain.
