A secret of successful and relaxed self-employed people is to rely on many different pillars. So instead of having just one source of income, they build up a whole series of them, which lowers the risk and also increases the potential of the total income.
Your products play an important role here because you have to create them first, but you are very independent of third parties. Again and again, you read about Google AdSense publishers that have been blocked or about lucrative partner programs that have been discontinued overnight. This is of course very annoying and can hit your earnings hard.
First of all, you have your products 100% in your own hands. In addition, you are flexible with the distribution channels and, if necessary, you can even take everything into your own hands and thus be completely independent.
So if you have a certain reach, your products are worth considering.
Digital vs Physical Products
The only question that now arises is whether one should rather create and sell digital or physical products.
Physical products have the advantage that they can be something special. They are real and haptic and are therefore well received by many people.
However, it is also quite time-consuming to create physical products because, for example, pre-financing is often necessary here, which entails a certain risk. Sales are also time-consuming and all of this means that the margins are relatively low.

All of this means that getting started with digital products is much easier, especially for beginners. That is why I would recommend using digital products, especially for beginners, but also in many other cases.

The most widespread and also very popular are digital information products. These are, of course, primarily eBooks, which are becoming more and more popular, especially through eBook readers, of course.

Useful? Yes, although you should have a certain reach and awareness, especially with eBooks. At least with specialist eBooks.

Not as popular in the German-speaking network as in the USA, but digital templates are on the way. These can be things like Lightroom presets or printables, for example. You can also find Excel templates again and again.
Such templates are very special solutions for a clearly defined target group. If you can find and meet such a need, it can be quite lucrative.
Useful? With the right solution for the right target group, it can be a very interesting digital product that often does less work than an eBook, for example. But here too, of course, it is important to reach the right target group.
Photos
Photos are becoming more and more important on the Internet and so it is not surprising that stock photo providers are used very much. As a passionate photographer, you can benefit from this trend by making your great photos available for purchase on platforms such as Fotolia.
It sounds easy, but it's a tough business. It takes a lot of photos to generate relevant income. Warnings from photographers are probably more lucrative, but I'm not a fan of that.
Useful? Quite possible as an additional source of income if you take a lot of high-quality photos anyway. But you shouldn't underestimate the effort.
Music
The same applies here as with the photos. If you are a (hobby) musician who produces a lot of your pieces anyway, you can sell your music via sales platforms such as Digistore24.

The situation is similar to the development of software and apps. While apps can still be developed well by a single person and distribution via the app stores does not involve any logistical effort, things are different with the right software. Complex software solutions are often too time-consuming for lone fighters.
In addition, the app stores are now hopelessly overcrowded and it is very difficult to get attention there.
Useful? Good software can be lucrative in the right niche, but it's a full-time job nonetheless. With the apps, on the other hand, there are always success stories, but most of them earn very little with them.
Online Courses
Online courses have become more and more popular in recent years. Whether simply as digital video or more complex interactive courses, this is a digital product that offers a lot of potentials.

Useful? Online courses are very exciting, but require good know-how and a certain ability to present.
Physical Products

This point is very general, but I cannot go into every single physical product. In general, most successful product manufacturers started at some point with the idea of a useful product. In this respect, a real product of your own is more of a full-fledged business idea for a startup and not an additional source of income that you run on the side. Especially since the financial risk is not without it.
An alternative is crowdfunding via platforms such as Kickstarter. Here, many people realize their ideas for their products without having to make a large financial contribution.
Useful? If you are only looking for an additional pillar in your independence, your physical products are certainly one size too big. On the other hand, it makes a lot of sense as a basis for a company.
Foreign Products
Instead of developing and producing your product, you can sell third-party products. This saves the high manufacturing costs and still allows you to use the other options.
Many also outsource the logistics through DropShipping or Amazon FBA and therefore “only” have to take over marketing and sales. This is also feasible for sole proprietorships.
Useful? If you want to sell physical products, then third-party products are worth considering. The risk is lower and you can gain a lot of experience to later perhaps produce your products after all.
