Below, I'll take a look at a few real examples of YouTubers and their earnings. In doing so, I am looking into the question of whether it is possible to live on YouTube alone.

I also analyze what matters to generate a good income.

In this article, I don't want to go into the big YouTube earners, which almost everyone is already familiar with.

Well-known faces like PewDiePie, Gronkh, and Co. reportedly make millions with their videos.

That is tempting and also quite exciting, but for most of them, it is not realistic. In addition, you shouldn't necessarily use this as a benchmark when starting your own YouTube channel. You can only be disappointed.

That's why I looked out for a few realistic revenue reports from YouTubers and also found one or the other interesting insight.

Gabella

The first glimpse is from an American YouTuber who has quite good numbers overall. At least as far as subscribers are concerned:

She says she earns an average of 75 cents to $ 1 per 1,000 video views. That coincides with the numbers that you hear again and again, although there are of course fluctuations here, as she says herself.

In total, she has earned around 1,000 dollars so far, although this is probably significantly fewer thanks to AdBlocker. Because, of course, only video views are counted for advertising where advertising is displayed.

She is aware of the fact that you can earn a lot of additional income through product presentations or sponsored videos. But she is very careful because she doesn't want to introduce anything that she can't stand by 100%.

According to her statements, she could make between $ 20 and $ 120 per paid video. With larger channels, of course, much more is possible.

Vexxed

This channel has significantly more subscribers, which, however, has fewer videos. A very interesting contrast. Let's take a look at the numbers first:

In October 2016, the operator took in $ 5,674.50, which he says is a very good month. Incidentally, about $ 200 of this comes from YouTube Red, the subscriber service that has not even started in Germany.

In total, he has earned $ 26,288.04 purely through YouTube advertising with his videos, which is not bad.

However, it has great fluctuations in it. It brings a lot of benefits when a video goes viral. But mostly the income is rather low.

The official CPM (earnings per 1,000 views) is $ 5.47. But don't be fooled here. For this, only the video views are counted where advertising was displayed and monetized. So all video views with adblocker or if no advertising is displayed are not counted here.

The realistic earnings per 1,000 views are 93 cents. So also in the known area.

The third example today is an activated channel that a couple operates. Of course, also from the USA.

The revenue from YouTube alone was around $ 2.25 per 1,000 views, which is pretty good. It just depends a lot on the subject of the videos.

First of all, of course, you have to restrictively say that these are all examples from the USA and therefore only partially transferable to the German market.

Nevertheless, the examples show that decent income is quite possible, but even many Americans cannot make a living from it. Of course, it also depends on what your goals and wishes are. But most of them do not get rich with it.

At least you won't be able to make giant leaps with YouTube advertising revenue alone. Sponsoring videos are a lucrative option, but that again comes at the expense of your independence and transparency is not necessarily always available on YouTube, to put it cautiously.

The amount of videos is only partially decisive for the amount of income. Much more important is how often these are called. Many YouTubers have thousands of videos but only a few hundred views per video. Despite the high expenditure, there is not a lot of income.

It is much more worthwhile if you have a greater reach per video and you can do that with videos that are special and stand out from the crowd. Of course, hitting a nerve with YouTube viewers also helps.

Regular videos have a strong impact on the number of views and thus also on advertising revenue. That's not surprising, since it's just AdSense for videos. And with Google AdSense, this relationship between views and earnings is just as strong.

Conclusion On Making Money With YouTube

Don't be dazzled by the YouTuber millionaires who are constantly in the limelight. These are absolute exceptions and even if you can have such a YouTuber as a role model, you should approach the matter reasonably realistically.

Earning money on YouTube is not easy and it takes a very large reach and, above all, frequently watched videos to generate relevant income.

A combination of regular videos and special content that attracts a lot of attention works best.
