Once you have achieved good rankings and regular visitors, you will earn money again and again with the content you have created once. This not only ensures increasing income but is also a relatively passive income.

But often these friends don't last long. The rankings are falling, the technology is on strike and the visitors are staying away.

You can counteract this by making your website as timeless as possible. This applies to all sub-aspects, such as the topic, design, and content. In this way, you increase the chances that your website will make money for many years to come.

Of course, the following tips are no guarantee that your website will still function optimally in 10 years, after all, nobody can look into the future, but you significantly increase the chances of the long-term success of your website.

On the one hand, of course, this affects your interests. Do you even want to deal with the topic in the long term?

But the question of whether the topic is still important and attractive for many people in the future should also be asked. One way of gauging this is Google Trends. With this tool, you can see the development of the interest in individual topics very well and often also get a forecast from Google. Of course, this is not enough for 10 years in the future, but overall you can already estimate how things will go with the topic.

It is also very helpful if you are familiar with the topic and can make a relatively well-founded assessment of whether it is a worthwhile topic in the long term.

One thing to keep your hands off of is tech-related issues. So I keep seeing websites or blogs that focus (also in the domain) on a certain game console or on an event that takes place at a certain point in time. This is of course not timeless.

The choice of topic/niche should be carefully considered, also from the point of view of long-term potential.

Of course, you have to rely on certain technology as the basis for your website. This applies, for example, to software, plugins, or scripts.

The problem with this is that there is a rapid evolution in technology. Solutions come and go within a very short time. But we don't want our timeless website to be based on a technology that will no longer work in a few years.

So your solution, your own CMS, for example, could be a good idea if you are familiar with it. But I would also prefer an established content management system, which is widespread and has a large developer community, to a new, stylish CMS that may not even establish itself in the long term.

In general, you should use as few plugins, addons, or external libraries as possible, especially if they have special functions that are deeply integrated into the system.

For example, with WordPress, I would use a plugin that shows an additional widget for something. If this plugin does not work anymore, then one widget is gone. For example, I would not use a plugin for the SSL conversion or the automatic linking of articles in an article series. If this plugin no longer works, then there are major problems that can negatively affect the ranking, for example.

In any case, you should check beforehand what happens if the plugin does not work anymore.

External services to host your website are currently very popular, e.g. website modules. That is completely okay, but you should also check here how secure this service is in the long term. If it is switched off unexpectedly, then your website is gone.

That is why I host my blogs and websites with various providers whose hosting I have known for a long time and I also make regular backups so that in case of doubt I can quickly move the websites to another provider.

Of course, website technology cannot be chosen to be truly 100% timeless, as a lot is changing here, but you can still reduce the risk that the technology will thwart your plans.

Create A Timeless Web Design

Web design in particular is constantly subject to new trends so that it seems impossible to create a timeless design here. And to be honest, it doesn't make much sense to rely on the same layout for 10 years.

Nevertheless, when designing your website you can make sure to be as timeless as possible. So you should rely on current web design standards that are established and fully supported. On the other hand, you should keep your hands off unusual new design trends. Will they even prevail?

Therefore you should avoid external resources, libraries, and scripts as much as possible or at least make sure that you use a very popular and well-maintained resource.

Content management systems that separate the layout from the content are also recommended. For example, with WordPress, it is very easy to change the theme.

Simple and simple web designs have proven themselves very well in the past and mostly still look appealing despite all the trends and fashions. It is also much easier to adapt a simple design.

In any case, the focus should be on usability and the user experience. No matter what new web design trends are coming, websites that are easy to use and easy to understand are always well received.

Another tip in this regard is that your content should be aimed at beginners rather than professionals. Apart from the fact that there are many more beginners, this content is usually not so strongly affected by new knowledge and new know-how. So they are more timeless.

Nevertheless, you won't have to keep updating older content. This should also be done to keep the website timeless.

In addition, that doesn't mean that you should only publish evergreen content. Other content can also be useful if, for example, it brings a lot in the short term. For example, really good news could bring a lot of backlinks. The news itself is not worth much later, but the backlinks are. Incidentally, videos, for example, are a type of content that will remain very popular in the future.

One more tip. I automatically hide the publication date on many of my websites after a certain time. The old date tends to put off readers of old, but still good and useful articles.

And one should pay a lot of attention to on-page optimization, which has become more and more important in recent years. Especially since you have everything under control yourself with the on-page measures.

Creating your newsletters is also a good long-term marketing strategy. eMails are still the most important communication medium in many areas and will certainly remain so. Anyone who sets up a large distribution list here can benefit in the long term.

Social media is certainly one of the most changeable areas and yet one should also be active here for timeless websites. Facebook has established itself so strongly that you can take action here without hesitation. They are sure to be there in 10 years.

In the field of marketing and SEO, too, you should think long-term and implement as timeless measures as possible. This is especially true with Google, where you should avoid any manipulation.

Last but not least, it is also about making money itself, monetization. A timeless website of course only makes sense for the self-employed if you can earn money with it permanently.

On the other hand, paid articles or link rental are not recommended. Something like this either only brings you money once or it is too risky.

Of course, I also rely on plugins for monetization. Plugins such as Auto Affiliate Links ’or Pretty Links ensure that affiliate links and advertising can be incorporated and maintained much more easily. After all, affiliate programs are also discontinued and you have to switch to another. You don't want to manually exchange the affiliate links in 500 articles.
