Sources Of Income From Self-Employed In The Network And Their Development - Readers keep asking me about my income here on self-employed online. The last time I published my income report was at the end of 2011.

In my article today I would like to go into the proportions of individual sources of income and describe how these have developed over the years.

Among other things, I'll talk about how many page views were necessary for certain revenue milestones. Last but not least, I also look a little into the future.

When I started my blog in early 2007, I didn't have any sources of income built into my blog. In the beginning, it was hardly worth it since of course there weren't many visitors yet.

However, I quickly built in the first source of income and tested what that brings. Of course, it was only a few euros at first, but still. Even a few euros are very motivating if you have earned them yourself.

And so over time I've tried more and more sources of income, and I've seen some come and go. That's one reason why I'm not relying on just one source of income.

Development Of My Sources Of Income

Over the more than 9 years that I have been running myself, the income and the sources of income have of course changed a lot. During this time, many new sources of income have been added, but some have also disappeared.

In the following, I report on my sources of income and how they have developed.

Google AdSense

It all started with Google AdSense. Just one month after starting my blog in February 2007, I tried AdSense Banner and gained my first experience with a source of income.

Of course, it was a slow start. In the first few months, it was only a few euros that I could earn with it. However, this piqued my interest.

In the following 2 years, the AdSense earnings have grown to low three-digit amounts, which I was satisfied with. However, stagnation then set in, despite the steadily increasing number of visitors.

That was the time when I dealt more intensively with AdSense optimization. At that time I was able to learn a lot and gain a lot of useful experience that was and still is useful not only for AdSense but also, for example, for affiliate marketing.

Google AdSense still works fine on my blog today, even if it's just a small source of income.

I also used Contaxe for a while, but that didn't do much and then the service was discontinued.

Statistics Facts
I was able to record three-digit AdSense earnings from 10,000-page impressions, which is certainly also due to my topic, where the click prices are quite good.

 

Affiliate Marketing

The second source of income that I used on Selbstaendig-im-netz.de was affiliate marketing. That was in July 2007. Here, too, there was little income in the first few months.

However, I came across Google's AdSense affiliate program in the fall of 2007. Back then you still got a commission if you referred new AdSense publishers and they earned something. A milestone for me was a $ 150 commission that I received from this affiliate program one day. That was such a moment when you noticed that more is possible.

Gradually, I tested and implemented other partner programs, but here too I saw many providers come and go. So the great AdSense affiliate program was quickly discontinued. And there was also a partner program for Google AdWords, which even provided vouchers as advertising material. Unfortunately, that doesn't exist anymore.

But with my increasing reach and the trust I've built up in the meantime, many partner programs are going well. I am mainly an affiliate of products and services that I use myself and can recommend. Since I then also show what they have done for me and how I use them, it works very well.

The best running partner programs include Amazon PartnerNet, the CleverReach newsletter service, and the Market Samurai SEO tool.

However, affiliate marketing is by no means a sure-fire success, as I have found myself often enough. For example, for a long time, I earned next to nothing with the Amazon partner program. It took time and a lot of tests on my part to find out how to make good money with it. The Amazon affiliate program runs even better on my niche websites.

Statistics Facts
I regularly earned more than 100 euros with affiliate marketing from around 35,000 page views. I was able to earn more than 1,000 euros from around 130,000-page impressions.

 

Paid Article

7-8 years ago, paid articles were exactly what you would imagine them to be. You wrote an article about a product or website and got paid for it. So it was about readers. These services no longer exist today. Instead, it's all about the backlinks in the articles.

In the first few years, I used providers like Origami or Hallimash and it was a nice thing, especially in the early days. It was relatively easy and quick money to make. I was able to post the first income with it in August 2007.

However, even back then I didn't always feel so comfortable with it, although I carefully selected the assignments so that they fit my blog thematically.

Later I also offered directly paid posts on my blog and some companies accepted the offer. Here, too, it was important to me that I only present companies or products that fit and that I want to write something about.

But paid articles are not a permanent source of income. You get one-time money and that's it. In addition, these always look like foreign bodies in the blog, no matter how hard you try. That's why I completely removed this source of income from my blog a few years ago and no longer use it.

Advertising

I started renting advertising banners relatively late. It wasn't until December 2007, a good 10 months after starting my blog, that I rented out the first banner.

In the beginning, however, it was only double-digit income and by no means very stable. There were also months after that when I did not take anything. Gradually, however, not only did the income become more stable, but it also increased.

Advertising income is very traffic-dependent, which is why I raised the prices for my banners about once a year, as the number of visitors also increased.

Of course, I've tried various ad networks, and I've also tested premium marketers. But I was very dissatisfied with the results, which is why I switched completely back to direct marketing. It costs a bit of maintenance every month, but I have very, very high utilization of my advertising space and can charge good prices for my banners.

A few years ago I removed the header banner from my blog during a layout relaunch. It made good money, but it bothered me too. But the other banners were able to absorb that and the banner revenue is still very important to me.

From around 30,000 page impressions, I have achieved three-digit income with advertising banners. The revenue increased to four digits from around 130,000-page impressions.

 

eBook

The newest source of income on my blog is my niche page-building e-book. But it took me a long time to do this. It was released in February 2015.

At first, I thought for a long time about which product I could create or offer. Then it took a while to finish the eBook. But it was worth it.

After the high for the launch of the eBook, there is stable income, which has now become an important pillar of my blog. Of course, my reach and reputation help a lot.

The creation of the eBook took a lot of work in advance, which was certainly one reason why I hesitated for a long time. But now, thanks to Digistore24, I don't have to spend any more time with it, as sales are completely automated.

Proportions Of Revenue Streams

Unfortunately, I cannot give you any concrete income figures in this article, which has various reasons that led to the fact that at the end of 2011 I no longer published my income reports.

But I can say that I achieve a higher four-digit income with Selbstaendig-im-netz.de, although of course that always fluctuates a little.
Affiliate marketing revenue makes up almost half of the total revenue. This shows how well affiliate marketing works when you have built up to reach and trust. As I have already written, I use many partner programs. Among them are a few larger ones, but also many smaller ones, which all together generate very good income.

The income from advertising and my eBook are the same and each amount to almost a quarter of the total income. These are very important and amazingly stable sources of income.

Google AdSense is not much more than a supplement, but at just under 10% it is also not unimportant.

With around 11,000 page views, I was able to earn more than 100 euros per month. My income reached four digits from around 50,000-page impressions. I was able to make a living from my blog from around 150,000-page impressions.

 

Future Of My Sources Of Income

For the next few years, I assume that the income from advertising and Google AdSense will tend to decline. Of course, that also depends a little on how the other sources of income develop.

I'm planning a consolidation in affiliate marketing. I will take out some weak affiliate programs and focus more on the ones that remain. Nevertheless, I will continue to use many different partner programs in the future, as this simply ensures that it is a lucrative and stable pillar.

A lot will happen to our products in the future. I will revise my existing eBook, create new eBooks and also offer a first video course. I see a lot of potential here and that's why this source of income will certainly become more important in the future.

Conclusion

I am very satisfied with the distribution of my sources of income and have been able to build a very stable income with it over the past few years.

But life is change and that will also be the case with the sources of income in the future. That's why I will report on changes and new experiences now and then.
