I created a niche website about dehumidifiers and construction dryers in spring 2015.
How this has developed after the challenge, what else I did with it, and what the traffic and income look like, you will find out below.
My Niche Website From 2015

| My Niche Website From 2015 - Development, Statistics, And Revenue |
As part of the Niche Site Challenge 2015, I was looking for a niche that seems lucrative and suits me.
I decided on the subjects of “dehumidifiers” and “building dryers” because we had just finished building our new office building. This not only allowed me to gain and refresh a lot of experience (we had our house built 10 years ago) but also took a lot of photos that I was able to use for the niche website.
It was by no means an easy decision since dehumidifiers and especially building dryers are not typical consumer products and are often only needed for a limited time. But I decided to do it because the competition wasn't that strong and the income potential was good.
The result was the niche website luftentfeuchter-und-bautuchter.de.
I implemented the site based on a multisite WordPress installation, which is why I didn't have to completely reinstall WordPress. I used my typical plugins again to integrate the desired functions. Among other things, the plugins WP Product Review and Pretty Link Lite.
I didn't create the layout from scratch either but rather used the version of the standard Twenty Thirteen theme that I had adopted the year before. I adjusted the color of this a bit with the help of CSS but otherwise adopted it as usual.
This made the technical creation of my niche website much faster and easier than before.
In terms of content, I was able to fall back on a certain amount of prior knowledge, since, as already written, I was already working with building dryers during the construction of our office building. These were already very useful for our house construction 10 years ago and this time again.
But of course, I have read more background knowledge about the functionality, etc. Based on this, I have created some background articles and have already written one or two product presentations. Mind you, no test, as I understandably did not have any construction dryers to test. Neither the devices nor the “wet” environment would have been available for a test. And if you don't test something, you shouldn't speak of a test!
After that, the niche website was online.
Expansion Of The Niche Website
After the end of the challenge, my effort was no longer high.
Since June 2015 I've written a few product presentations and built them into the site. I have also added 2 new parts to my house building diary. However, 2 parts are still missing here.
In the fall, I integrated current offers with the help of the Amazon API, because I don't like Amazon's bargain widget.
I have also installed the Amazon Affiliate for WordPress * plugin, which, in addition to bestseller lists (which I display with my solution), can also display beautiful product boxes and other interesting elements. If you want to build in Amazon bestseller lists, which have proven to be very effective with me, I recommend this plugin. (With the code ‘SIN20’ you get a 20% discount on the plugin price.)
I added another premium plugin mainly because of the integrated comparison table. The free version of WP Product Review is very useful. With WP Product Review Pro you can display very attractive product comparison tables based on the product reviews that have already been created.
Based on previous affiliate orders, I also created an article with my visitors' favorite building dryers in autumn.
I haven't done more since the end of the challenge.
Niche Site Traffic
Since the challenge, my niche website has continued to develop positively. Above all, a very stable development can be seen with no major fluctuations.
Over the winter there seems to be more interest in this topic.
This is also confirmed by the Google Trends data, according to which there is significantly more interest in this topic in autumn/winter than in spring. So I'm curious to see what this spring will be like.
The niche website has now generated over 100,000 page views, which I am very satisfied with.
Unsurprisingly, the majority of visitors come from Google. In January 2016 this was 76.1%.
Google Rankings
The rankings in Google are of course primarily responsible for the good number of visitors. My niche website can boast some top placements, of which the first position for the keyword “construction dryer” is certainly the most interesting.
The niche website already had very good rankings at the end of the challenge, which has stabilized or even improved.
Here is an excerpt from some of the current rankings that I track with the help of analytics.
However, the rankings in the area of dehumidifiers can be expanded. With the main keyword, my site is still only on Google page 3. That is of course not so great.
Niche Side Revenue
In terms of revenue, my niche website grew very slowly for the first 3 months. We only raised 18.81 euros after 13 weeks, which is not a lot.
However, I started monetization relatively late and, as mentioned above, spring is not the main season for this niche.
With that, the niche website has developed more slowly than my tool case website. My pool heating niche website was even more successful after 3 months, although spring is the main season.
Since the challenge, however, the income from my construction dryer site has developed well.
With Google AdSense, I was able to earn a total of 151.68 euros from May 2015 to the end of January 2016, even though I had taken out AdSense in the meantime because of the cookie labeling requirement. Now AdSense has been installed again since December (including cookie labeling) and is running quite well.
However, I was able to generate the majority of my income with the Amazon partner program. It was 919.30 euros from May 2015 to January 2016. Here, Amazon has once again proven itself as a product-related partner program.
In January 2016 alone, I was able to earn 191.56 euros, which is the highest value so far.
The income can certainly be expanded further, but I have little time to maintain and expand my niche websites, which is why the main advantage for me is that I don't have to do a lot on my niche websites once they have been created.
If, on the other hand, I invested 20-30 hours every month, the income would certainly look different. But I just don't have the time.
An interesting finding for me was that high-priced products are profitable. Certainly not that many of them will be bought, but if you then get a commission of 15 or even 20 euros per construction dryer, that's a nice thing.
The elimination of the Amazon cap of 10 euros also had a positive effect here. At the end of 2014, this was abolished when the Amazon commissions were restructured.
Overall, the niche website may not be as lucrative as my toolbox site, but it's developing well and I'm happy with it so far. After half of February, the income is at the rate of 240 euros, which confirms the positive trend.
If I had to calculate a fictitious hourly wage over the 9 months from the income, I would get around 15.30 euros/hour with around 70 hours invested.
That is not great, but it will increase because I will not (be able) to invest much time in this site in 2016. Just a little maintenance now and then and maybe a new item or two.
Conclusion
That was the look back at my niche website from 2015. You won't get rich that quickly, but the figures clearly show that it's worth it.
Many beginners would be happy to earn more than 200 euros a month and you can build up several such niche websites, which then bring very good income in total.
As part of the 2016 Niche Site Challenge, I will show you how to do it again, step by step.
