During this survey a few years ago I wanted to know how my readers see blogging. Is that the right business model that you can rely on in the long term?

137 readers took part in the survey at the time and gave their opinion on it.

26 percent of the survey participants neither answered in the general negative nor the affirmative. With these, it came down to the topic itself.

On the other hand, 25% were sure that you could blog professionally with a blog until you retire.

23% did not see it that positively and preferred not to look too far ahead on the Internet. Whether there will be blogs in their current form in 10 or 20 years is certainly an interesting question. So much is changing so quickly on the web. If you look back 10 years, the changes are huge.

Only 13% did not see blogs as a business model from which one can live in the long term.

Another 13% believed that as an individual blogger you will probably not last that long. Only if you find co-authors and employees for the “organizational stuff” can you turn it into a lasting business, so the opinion.

Especially when it comes to the last statement, I fluctuate a lot myself. On the one hand, it sounds a bit like typical German business thinking: “If you don't have any employees, you're not a real entrepreneur”. Unfortunately, many still think that way, but the Internet offers lone fighters more opportunities than ever before.

On the other hand, I also see the problem with myself that I have to do a lot more than just writing articles. The administrative effort increases with time and success and if you want to manage all of this alone in the long run, it becomes difficult.

Overall, however, one can safely say that most of the survey participants at the time generally saw blogs as a possible business model. However, it depends on the topic and whether you manage to spread the blog work across several shoulders. And even then, nobody can look 30 or 40 years into the future.

Do You Make Money With Banner Advertising?

Another survey is specifically dedicated to the topic of income from banner advertising. It's about the question of whether you make money with banners on your blogs.

In my last survey, a total of 185 readers responded to this question. 37% made money from advertising banners, but not particularly much. In addition, 31% have never made money with banners. Only 18% said they were doing well and making good money with banners.

After all, 14% stated that they used to make money with banners, but no longer at the time of the survey. Was this an indication that banner advertising is generally on the decline?

My personal experiences with banner advertising are divided. While the direct marketing here on the blog is still going very well and I am almost always fully booked despite price increases, things are not going so well on other blogs.

In addition, I have had bad experiences with banner marketplaces myself. Hardly anything came in.

In any case, there is a development away from the watering can principle towards more quality. There are premium banner networks that only record selected websites and blogs and generate good income. And if you have a successful blog with the right target group, direct marketing also works very well.

For the mass of blogs and websites, however, only the leftover space marketers remain, most of whom have low CPMs and poor utilization. You need a lot of traffic to make it worthwhile on the bottom line.

How Are Your Experiences With Crowdfunding?

There used to be donation buttons, today it's Steady and Patreon. Crowdfunding has experienced a huge boom in recent years and some blogs are also making very good money with it.

In a survey a few years ago I asked about your experiences with donation buttons. 186 readers took part in this survey.

At that time, 56% had not yet installed a donation button. It is difficult to say why that was in detail. One reason was for sure that even the most well-known “Flattr” solution was by no means known to every Internet user. There was still no talk of Patreon and Steady.

34% had already installed a donation button in the past but hardly earned anything with it. It takes a large and loyal community or a very good reputation for bloggers to raise more than just a few cents or euros through donations.

Only 3% of the survey participants stated that the donations were worthwhile. One cannot show more clearly that donation buttons were not a source of income for the masses at the time.

But times have changed and Patreon in particular is an important source of income for many blogs, podcasts, and YouTubers.

Do You Make Money With Backlinks On Your Website/Blog?

The not entirely undisputed source of income “rent backlinks” was very popular in the past. Although Google doesn't like bought or sold links at all and likes to impose ranking penalties and the like when they are discovered, some blog operators used to rely on this simple and lucrative source of income.

Not all of them, though. 44% of the participants in my survey at the time felt the risk was too high. At least 27% wanted to sell or rent links back then but couldn't find a customer. That was not that easy if you didn't want to use the link marketplaces on the web, such as backlinksellers * or SeedingUp *.

12% stated that they rent or sell links and 9% were a little more precise and stated in the survey that they rent or sell links for monthly or one-off amounts.

Many years ago I found the link sale a very nice source of income, but of course, I saw the danger of it. That's why I've long been recommending that you shouldn't sell links on major websites and blogs. You can do that for smaller projects that are not that critical, but you should be able to live with the fact that there could be trouble with Google at some point.

But if there is income from backlinks, I would rely on link rental. One-off amounts for backlinks are quite nice at first, but backlinks only make sense if they are permanent. This means that you could generate good rental income over a long time.

All in all, you can still earn significantly more today from renting backlinks, even if this increases the effort a little because you have to invoice again and again.

Do You Make Money With Affiliate Marketing?

I have not yet dealt with the income from affiliate marketing in a survey. I now earn a large part of my income from this source of income.

I mainly rely on the Amazon partner program, but I also have many other partner programs that I use. Lifetime partner programs in particular are an interesting and stable source of income.

Affiliate marketing not only works very well on niche sites but also in my blogs. I think it's the most stable source of income a blogger can build. However, you have to invest a certain amount of work here and also test and optimize a lot later so that it is worthwhile.

Of course, there are also their products, such as eBooks.

Can You Still Make Money With Blogs In The Future?

As you can see from my own, but also other examples, it is quite possible to earn money with blogs and some have even built their independence on it and can make a living from it.

I stopped my web design business a good 5-6 years ago and only concentrated on my blogs and websites. In particular, Selbstaendig-im-Netz.de, but also other blogs such as Adventure-Brettspiele.de or Microphone-Test-Podcast.de have developed very well and today I make a living from it.

However, it is neither easy nor can you be sure that it will work forever. But what in life can you do that?

In conclusion, I would say that you have to run a blog as a business model in the same way as you do with any other business, otherwise, you will mostly not be successful. Only those who stick with it in the long term with perseverance, discipline, and motivation can earn good money with a blog.
