Tips For More Website Income - 1. Find And Optimize Profitable Keywords
- In my last blog income reports, I noticed, among other things, that my blog income has stagnated for about half a year.

It has been between 3,500 and 4,000 euros every month since then. And even if I am very satisfied with this income, I would still like to do something about this stagnation. Because in these 6 months the number of visitors has increased further, so that should also be possible with the income.

This series of articles reflects my approach and is intended to provide tips on how to increase your blog income.

Parts of the article series:

  1. Find and optimize profitable keywords

  2. Profitable target groups

  3. Optimize content

  4. Analyze search engine rankings

  5. Conversion rate optimization

  6. New sources of income

  7. Testing for more revenue

Find And Optimize Profitable Keywords

At the beginning of all optimizations, there should be a thorough analysis. Because if you do not know where the current problems are, you cannot take appropriate measures, but fish in the dark.

Therefore, one should look at the development of the number of visitors at the beginning:

  • How have visitor numbers developed in the last few months?
The various sources of income all depend to a greater or lesser extent on the number of visitors so that it is important for the overall assessment of how the traffic has developed.

  • Which content of your blog is visited particularly often?
Of course, you should work with what you have. And popular content with a lot of visitors is a good place to start.

  • Where do the visitors come from?
It is very important where the visitors come from. Because regular readers should be treated differently than e.g. one-time search engine visitors.

  • What search terms did the visitors enter?
The search terms that your visitors entered in Google and Co. are also very important. Because there are search terms or search phrases that can be monetized much better than others.

  • The bounce rate
The bounce rate shows the percentage of visitors to a subpage that left the website/blog straight away. The lower the value, the better.

The data can ideally be taken from your statistics tool. For me, that's Google Analytics.

Search Terms

As just mentioned, the search terms are very important. Because these are in themselves either quite easy to monetize or not.

It makes a difference whether someone types “buy accounting software” into Google or “tips for accounting software” and comes to your site. The first one seems to be very feasible for money by installing an affiliate program with accounting software on the target page or, for example, Amazon affiliate links.

The latter suggests the search for free information.

Here you just have a look at the top 100 according to the number of visitors (2) and also display the target page as a column (1).

Now it goes to the flow work. You’re getting good traffic for all of these keywords. Now the next step is to analyze which keywords will be profitable from it.

The bounce rate (3) is interesting insofar as this keyword gets the right target group if only a few bounce back directly. However, it can also be a sign that the previous content of the target is not optimized well enough if the bounce rate is high.

Google AdWords Keyword Tool

First, let's take a look at the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. This can be used to analyze the click prices for keywords.

To make it easy for yourself, you should simply export the analytics list as a CSV file. Then you can simply copy the 100 keywords to the clipboard and paste them into the AdWords Keyword Tool.

You must check the box “Only show ideas that are very similar to my search terms”. And that you check “Exact” in the left column. Otherwise, you will get the wrong search volume values.

Then you add the column “Estimation of the average CPC” and then you can see what the keywords are roughly worth.

This is less about the specific CPC values (1) and more about the trend. The higher the click price in AdWords, the higher the competition of AdWords companies and their willingness to spend money on AdWords ads. And the more companies are willing to spend money, the more profitable the subject is likely to be that is related to the keywords.

I would now tick all of the keywords in the keyword list exported from Analytics that have a relatively good CPC value. Keywords with very low CPC, on the other hand, are probably not that easy to monetize.

What is also interesting about this AdWords keyword tool is that you get suggested additional keywords. So if you find keywords in this list that are similar to yours and that have very good CPCs, then write them down and write new articles soon or integrate these keywords into existing articles.

Think

After analyzing the CPC values, it is a matter of using your head.

You go through your keyword Excel list and check all the keywords that:

  • Contain specific product names for which there are also affiliate programs

  • Contain certain purchase terms such as “buy”, “shop”, “order” etc.

  • Indicate that someone needs a test report for their purchase decision, e.g. "test", "comparison", "the best"

  • Describe visitors' problems to which products/services can be offered as solutions

  • Show further signs that there is a specific interest in buying and not just looking for free information, etc.

The aim of this "exercise" is to identify what are known as money keywords. So the keywords that bring in traffic can be monetized.

Page Optimization

If you have now found out the keywords that will bring in money, then the next step is monetary optimization. Many keywords have so far not been monetized at all or incorrectly, e.g. through general banners on all pages.

To do this, you first have to know which pages are displayed for this keyword.

If you want to display all landing pages that are reached by this keyword, you first click on the desired keyword in Google Analytics and then click on the select box “None” and select “Landing page”.

Often it is only 1 landing page that gets the most traffic for a keyword. Sometimes, however, several, so that a monetary optimization of several landing pages is worthwhile.

The following is an overview of possible sources of income and how to use them for profitable keywords:

  • Affiliate Links
If there is an affiliate program for the keyword in question, it makes sense to include an affiliate banner and/or affiliate link on the landing page. You should test whether a banner (more attention) or an affiliate link (looks less like advertising) brings more clicks and conversions.

The “offer” on the banner or link should correspond to the search term and the topic of the page. For example, if the search term is “printing envelopes”, you should include a printing partner program and not a partner program for a designer who designs envelopes.

  • AdSense
Of course, AdSense can also work very well. Especially when the CPC is quite high, you should install AdSense for a while. Here, too, it can make sense to compare text ads and image ads.

I have already published more AdSense optimization tips here on the blog.

  • Banner Advertising
There is also the possibility of attracting advertisers for certain topics. I've had it myself that an advertiser only wanted to include advertising on 10 subpages because the topics of these articles fit very well with his offer.

  • Sell Products
Of course, you can also sell your products that are perfectly tailored to the visitors. This is only worthwhile with a certain number of visitors, but if it is the optimal offer for this target group, then the conversion rate should also be high.

  • Miscellaneous
Indirect sources of income should also not be ignored. If visitors are looking for specific help or information, for example, then you could include a registration for your newsletter that deals with precisely the problems or questions. Or a link to your free eBook on the subject. In the eBook and also in the newsletter there will of course be suitable advertising, affiliate links, etc.

Of course, you can and should improve the ranking of pages that can be monetized well, for example. But more on that in a later part of this series of articles.

And optimizing the landing pages themselves often makes sense and I'll dedicate myself to that soon.

Test Sources Of Income

I will deal with the subject of “testing” in more detail later, but here are a few words about it.

You shouldn't just test whether a certain affiliate banner works better than another or whether banners or links convert better.

You should also test different sources of income against each other. Brings more AdSense in a period X than an affiliate program. Or maybe I earn more with an advertising banner at a fixed price.

It is simply not enough with the one-time installation of a source of income on a target page. You also have to carry out optimization measures.

Part 2 "Target Groups"

The second part will be about the target groups, i.e. your visitors. Which are particularly valuable and why a lot of traffic is not everything.
