7 Tips For More Website Earnings - 4. Analyze Search Engine Rankings - Search engine rankings are the subject of today's “7 Tips for More Website Earning” article.
I will go into ways of finding out interesting keywords that are not yet ranking optimally on Google and Co.
But I'm also looking into the question of how important the rankings are and why you shouldn't just aim to optimize individual keywords.
Parts of the article series:
Search Engine Rankings

| Tips For More Website Earnings |
You can analyze your search engine rankings, and actually, we're only talking about Google (> 95% market share in Germany), in different ways.
I had already presented some free SEO tools with which you can partially monitor your rankings. A second article will be added soon.
And of course, there are also professional tools that offer many more options.
The fundamental question, however, is why should I analyze and, if necessary, optimize my search engine rankings at all?
I have the answer to this in the article "First page in Google - I can be satisfied with that, or not?" given. The further ahead you stand, the more visitors it brings. And that means you can usually earn more.
But how do you first find interesting keywords whose ranking you could optimize?
Find Interesting Keyword Rankings
Part 1 of the series of articles was about “Finding and optimizing profitable keywords”. From a monetary point of view.
This time it's about optimizing keyword rankings in Google.
There are various options for ranking analysis.
We are particularly interested in keywords that ...
- have a relatively high search volume
- stand in front of the jump to position 1, as the difference in clicks is particularly high
- are about to jump into the top 10, as only a few users call up the 2nd search results page
By Hand
If you use a statistics tool, such as Google Analytics, you can see which keywords Google visitors come from.
In Google Analytics under “Access Sources -> Keywords” you can see the top search terms. Now you can note them down and check by hand in Google where you are in the rankings.
Alternatively, you can of course also use a free SEO ranking tool and enter and analyze the keywords there.
Xovi
Paid SEO tools, such as Xovi *, enable a more extensive analysis of search terms than free tools can.
With 20 million keywords that Xovi has in the database, you can already find a lot to rank for.
The long tail can hardly be covered by a professional tool. But that's not bad, because the long-tail keywords only work in bulk anyway and you don't optimize individual ones.
Xovi shows you, for example, how many keywords rank between 1 and 10, between 11 and 20, etc.
Of course, you can also display the individual keywords or export them as CSV.
And so, for example, you can only display the keywords that are in the top 10 before the jump.
In addition, you could filter these and only display those that have good AdSense CPC click prices and a certain search volume. This will only show the financially interesting keywords.
The display of the winning keywords is also interesting to see new, good rankings and, if necessary, to improve them further.
These diverse functions ensure that you can find tons of (profitable) keywords where optimization of the ranking is worthwhile.
And when it comes to making money and not “just” a few blog visitors, the use of a paid SEO tool like Xovi can be worthwhile.
Webmaster Tools
Another alternative to ranking analysis is now the webmaster tools from Google.
Of course, this only works if you register your site there and the tool can collect data for a while.
But then there is nice and interesting information about your website and the rankings for individual keywords.
You can then, for example, also have the number of impressions on certain search result positions displayed and how high the click rate was there. You can then tell whether it is worth investing the energy in to get to position 1 or page 1.
The webmaster tools from Google are certainly not as extensive as a paid SEO tool and you cannot follow the ranking of a keyword yet. But now you can see very interesting things there and Google is constantly expanding the range of functions.
More about Google's Webmaster Tools will follow soon in a separate article.
Rankings Worth Optimizing
The aim of the exercise is now to find out the keyword rankings that are worth optimizing.
On an affiliate site, for example, I would try to get a few keywords with a high search volume and current positions of 11-13 on the first page of results.
The goal is of course that the traffic increases over the respective ranking.
Search Engine Optimization
How to increase the ranking in Google is not the topic of this article. Search engine optimization is too extensive and varied to be dealt with here in two paragraphs.
On the one hand, you can implement SEO on your pages. This is what is known as on-page SEO. This includes, for example, text and image optimization. The use of SEO plugins is just as much a part of this as internal linking and much more.
The second important factor is what is known as off-page SEO. This concerns e.g. the link building or the link purchase. But the social web is also playing an increasingly important role with its influence on search engine rankings.
Soon, I will speak up with detailed articles on search engine optimization. Until then, you should read one or two SEO books if you are interested. :-)
Rankings Are Not Everything
This article was about Google rankings and how to analyze them. Finally, I would like to point out once again that ranking analysis and optimization are not everything.
For “self-employed in the net”, I hardly optimize any search engine rankings at all.
In March 2011, I had around 20,000 different keywords from around 47,000 Google visitors. In addition to a few top keywords, a lot of longtail keywords, in particular, brought the traffic. Especially in a blog with a lot of articles, I see it as safer, more stable, and easier to rely on the long tail and not waste so much energy on optimizing a few top keywords.
With small affiliate sites or pure business sites, however, it is normal to optimize individual key keywords.
So you should think carefully about what you are investing your time in. Rankings are not everything.
Part 5 "Conversion Rate"
The fifth part of this article series is about the conversion rate. What influence does this have on your website and what can you do to optimize the conversion rate?
