2 Years Later - My Niche Website Traffic, Rankings, Revenue, And Effort

This is a good time to see if it is worth running a niche website for a longer time.
Many predict the end of niche websites again and again, but that this is not the case as shown by my tool case niche website, which was created during the 2014 Niche Site Challenge.
In this article, I'll talk about how it worked, what I've done with it, and what traffic and revenue look like.

The 2014 Niche Site Challenge began less than 2 years ago, during which I created a niche website about tool cases. This can be found at werkzeugkoffer-kaufen.de.
After a year break, this was the second niche site challenge and of course, I was curious to see whether the positive experiences from the first challenge in 2012 could be repeated. In the end, the niche website was even more successful than I expected.
Already 12 months ago I looked at the development of my niche website in a review article and came to a positive conclusion. Rankings, traffic, and income had developed well, and made sure that I had earned more than 3,000 euros with the site since it was launched.
All in all, I was of course very happy with the development, as I had put very little work into the site after the end of the challenge.
Development Of The Niche
Before I take a closer look at the development of my niche website over the past 12 months, I would like to take a look at the niche itself.
When choosing a niche for a niche website, you should, among other things, make sure that there is increasing interest or at least one that remains constant. Nothing is more annoying than creating a niche website with a lot of effort and then interest in that niche drops significantly.
That looks quite positive. In the last two years, the interest has even increased slightly, which suggests that this topic will be interesting for even longer. So after two years, I can say that the niche choice wasn't the worst.
Developing My Niche Website
Now let's get to the development of my niche website over the past 12 months.
In 2014, after the challenge, I invested around 2 hours per month in this niche website. Something about that changed in 2015 in that this time it was even less than 2 hours per month on average.
That was simply because I didn't do anything about it for many months. I checked the affiliate links once in spring and autumn.
In the autumn I looked again at the Amazon API and added current offers to the existing bestseller lists. But that went relatively quickly because I already had the basis of the Amazon API query.
And so I was able to incorporate other interesting affiliate link ads. To do this, I removed the Amazon bargain widget, which is based on Flash and is therefore no longer displayed in all browsers.
I was able to make another addition to the niche website by switching from the free WP Product Review plugin to the paid WP Product Review Pro.
With the Pro version, I have created a nice comparison table that is automatically created from the product views created (and of course is also automatically updated when new product items are created). A very nice thing.
Switching to the Pro version is also possible without any problems. All previous data will be adopted.
I ended up creating some new content, but not a lot, so that too was quick.
Overall, the effort was very low and was maybe 15-20 hours in the 12 months.
Incidentally, I automated the WordPress updates so that I didn't have to worry about it.
Rankings And Traffic
Let's take a look at some of the current rankings on my niche website. I determined this with the XOVI * SEO tool.
As you can see, my niche website ranks first on Google search for some interesting long-tail keywords.
But also for the main keyword, I am not bad with rank 3. That brings a lot of visitors, even if I would of course prefer to be in the first place. :-)
However, it is always a matter of weighing up the costs and benefits. Of course, I could invest a lot more time in the niche website, but my priorities are elsewhere.
All in all, I am very satisfied with it, especially considering the work that has been put into it.
Traffic
Spring and autumn are the main seasons for tool cases, even if demand for them does not collapse completely in summer and winter. There are between 7,000 and 10,000 sessions per month on the site. In total, there were 95,176 sessions and 293,952 page views in the last 12 months.
I am also very satisfied with that, even if you could, of course, increase these numbers with more work. But as I said, it's just a matter of priorities and what I like about niche websites is that you don't have to do a lot.
Revenue
Now we come to the crucial point. What has my niche website's revenue been like over the past 12 months?
I only had Google AdSense in it until autumn 2015, because then a cookie notice would have been necessary and I didn't feel like it.
In addition, AdSense previously only brought in around 20 euros a month, so it didn't hurt to take out these ads.
A total of 176.48 euros came in via AdSense in the last 12 months.
I preferred affiliate marketing, especially the Amazon partner program. This is a very good choice for product-related niche websites as everyone knows Amazon and almost all of them already have an account. Of course, this significantly lowers the buying threshold.
Overall quite stable income with a slight decrease in summer and a little more income in spring and during the Christmas business.
All in all, the Amazon partner program brought in 4,750.47 euros in the last 12 months.
That makes a total of almost 5,000 euros in revenue, which I am very satisfied with.
If you calculate the hourly wage for fun, that would be around 246 euros (with 20 hours invested). Of course, one cannot and should not completely disregard the creative effort. :-)
All in all, I invested around 85 hours in this site and earned around 8,000 euros in just under 2 years. That would be an hourly wage of around 94 euros. I can live with that too.
Conclusion
I am very happy with my niche website. The development was no longer so rapid, but it doesn't have to be. I hardly have any work to do with it.
For me, this is one of the biggest advantages of having a niche website. The example also clearly shows that niche websites are by no means dead, as some claim. Only the really bad affiliate projects that start with copied content and black hat SEO measures are dead.
On the other hand, if you build useful niche websites that comply with Google's rules, you can earn good money with them.
