Plista - Make Money Monday - I came across Plista quite a while ago.
The basic principle sounded very interesting, as it promised not only little effort, but also use blog functionality combined with a source of income.
I tested Plista and I want to share my experience with you guys today in this article.
This article is part of the Make Money Monday series of articles where I introduce a new source of income every week.
What is Plista?

Plista is a service that offers various advertising media that you can incorporate into your blog, for example.
Some of these advertising media are quite innovative, which gives Plista a certain unique selling point.
There are, for example, the RecommendationsAds, which I will deal with in particular today. Other articles on the respective website are displayed, with 1-2 advertisements in between.
The plugin/widget from Plista tries to find similar articles (more about the quality later) and 1-2 advertisements are displayed in between. In itself a great idea that combines a longer stay of visitors with a source of income.
As a rule, Plista bills according to clicks.
Further advertising materials from Plista are:
- Mobile Recommendation Ads
The same as the Recommendation Ads just presented, only for mobile ads. - Picture Ads
A very interesting form of advertising. Images are automatically provided with advertisements that are displayed when you move the mouse over the image. Very interesting for galleries. - Slide Recommendations
When scrolling down, content-related recommendations are displayed at the edge of the screen, which serves to increase traffic. - Display Ads
Quite classic text/banner displays with targeting and CPM billing.
However, to be able to use one of these other advertising media, you have to contact the Plista contact person directly. Only the RecommendationsAds are available to everyone.
All in all, a good selection of advertising material and innovative ideas.
Register at Plista
Before you can use one of Plista’s advertising materials, you have to register first of course.
To do this, click on the green button “Sell advertising space” on the Plista homepage.
A registration form awaits you on the following page.
In addition to the URL of your website, you can configure the RecommendationAds widget here. How to choose how many article recommendations (2-4) and how many advertisements (1-2) the widget should contain.
There are also a few layout options. Next, you state whether you are using a CMS and if so which one.
At the bottom, you can already see the recommendation widget as a preview and then simply click on “Next”.
In the following step, you have to create your Plista account.
To do this, you have to fill out a form that asks for an email address, desired password, and address, among other things.
You can also state here whether you are a company and enter your VAT ID. This is important to get the sales tax paid out.
After accepting the terms and conditions and the data protection regulations, you can “register” your account.
Now you enter your account details so that you can receive the payouts by transfer.
From 70 euros, the income is paid out, which is quite a lot.
However, it is good that you also receive a credit for your billing.
After you've done that, the registration is almost complete. You will also receive an email in which you have to click on a confirmation link.
Install Plista
After registering, you will immediately receive an integration code that you can simply insert into the desired location on your site.
The PDF instructions for installing the code, which is also offered, are positive. It explains in great detail how to do this.
If you have selected one of the CMS, e.g. WordPress, you get a plugin that you can simply install and then use very easily.
Then the recommendations and advertisements appear at the desired location on your own website/blog.
So the installation is quite simple and shouldn't be a problem.
Statistics
There is of course an evaluation of the displays and the clicks.
You can enter an individual start and end date and display the data for each widget created according to days, weeks, and months.
You can also look at the data for each weekday.
This is fine for an overview of the performance of the ads.
My Experiences
All in all, Plista makes a very good impression. The idea is well implemented, the technology works and the backend is exemplary.
Unfortunately, I didn't have such good experiences with my test.
I was particularly bothered by the quality of the recommendations and advertising.
In my experience, the recommendations of other own articles did not reach the quality of similar “Related Posts” plugins. Some articles from my blog were simply displayed, I couldn't see any thematic relationship.
In addition, as you can see in the first screenshot above, some articles were linked twice, which should be technically easy to prevent.
And again and again, no article recommendations were displayed, only advertising.
All in all, it didn't look technically perfect when I tested it a while ago.
I didn't find the advertisements appropriate either. According to Plista itself, however, these are user-dependent because a targeting mechanism is used. The advertisements do not have to have anything to do with the content of the respective article.
That would be okay, but the advertisements that were displayed looked too general for me and I didn't have the feeling that they were optimized for me.
All in all, the article recommendations were no alternative for me to my previously used “Related Posts” WordPress plugin, which is why I expanded Plista again.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Here is a summary of the advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
- Creative advertising material with additional potential to increase traffic
- Easy installation and good management
- Relatively large provider with a good advertising customer base
Disadvantage:
- Article recommendations often have nothing to do with the article itself
- Advertisements sometimes not appropriate
- Only 50% of the advertising revenue is paid to the publisher
Conclusion
I think Plista's approach is great. However, the implementation is not yet optimal, at least in my experience.
With a better relevance of the article recommendations, Plista would be much more interesting for me.
However, these are only my own experiences. If you are interested, you should give Plista a try.
