Search queries such as “get rich quick”, “how to get rich quick” and “get rich without a job” are in the thousands on the web every month.

Queries like “earn money with a lot of work”, “earn money with perseverance” or “earn money with discipline”, on the other hand, hardly exist at all, according to Google.

That may not be surprising, but it shows very nicely that many people, especially younger ones, are desperately looking for a way to earn a lot of money quickly and without work.

And if you don't want to get into organized crime, which certainly has a few disadvantages ;-), many get the idea that this would be possible, especially on the Internet.

There used to be such “serious” offers in the classifieds of daily newspapers as “Earn 5,000 euros per month with 2 hours of work a day.” At that time you “only” had to send in 200 euros to get all the information. And unfortunately, an alarming number of people did that too.

Today it is emails and websites that make similar promises and unfortunately many people still believe these offers and promises today.

Why I associate “younger people” with it. I believe that life experience has a lot to do with it. At 36 years of age, I myself have completely different experiences and therefore a different attitude towards many of these offers.

When I was young, I tended to believe such things, or rather, I wanted to believe them. From a few years ago, when the internet business picked up speed, I hoped to be one of those who would sell my startup for millions.

It wasn't my only plan, but you already dream of getting rich overnight and not having to worry about financially any more.

But reality looks different.

 

The Image To The Outside

When you read stories about Internet millionaires on the web or offline, it not only motivates you immensely (which is something positive in itself), it also consumes reality. And that's the biggest problem with that.

A picture is conveyed that has nothing to do with the reality of 99.9% of the self-employed.

It is similar to the image that sports reporting, for example, conveys. For example, when there are reports about football stars, it is never mentioned that 99% of young people who also dreamed of becoming professional footballers did not make it.

This is even more extreme in the USA. I'm a big football fan and a while ago I read a study that looked at the reality of making money there. There are stars who make millions, but the average career only lasts a little over 3 years. That means a lot of players are out after a year or two.

The average salary was $770,000 in 2009. However, many 2nd tier players have only made the minimum salary of $310,000.

Anyone who thinks that this would be a lot of money and that one would earn almost 1 million dollars in 3 years should consider that many players have to end their careers due to serious injuries, they often do not get a good job and taxes etc. also still to be incurred.

And then maybe the money will last for a few years, but then?

Not to forget the 99.9% of young people who dream of a professional career but don't make it.

What I'm trying to make clear is that reality is rarely what gets the most public attention.

And it is the same on the web.

 

The Truth About Making Money On The Web

It is possible to be successful on the web, but the image that many have of it is rather consumed:

 

It's A Lot Of Work

Building an (online) business takes a lot of work. And if you haven't won or inherited a lot of money, you will have to work yourself for better or worse. The promise made by many that one can achieve something without work usually turns out to be psychologically clever advertising.

At some point, when you have built something up after many years, you will certainly benefit from it and then (at least partially) with less work. But you can't get there without taking the first step.

 

It Takes A Long time

There are no shortcuts. Of course you should use the existing knowledge and that can save you from one or the other failure or save a little time. But it still remains a long process to develop a successful online business and, especially in the beginning, not much will be around.

 

It's A Risk

Even if I have not regretted the step into self-employment, there is still a certain risk associated with it. There are no guarantees. And failure is part of business. This is completely normal. If you have a lot of perseverance and discipline and get up again after failures, you have a good chance of making it.

 

Not All Of Them Make It

Let's be completely honest, not all of them make it. In principle, most of them already have the chance to make it, but in the end only a part remains.

In addition to one or the other lucky guy, there are those who work hard and a lot, have perseverance, put up with setbacks and, in addition to their goals and visions, do not close their eyes to reality. And “to create” here means to make a good living from it. I don't want to start from getting rich.

 

It's Not Sexy

Every now and then I wonder about comments or emails. Some see me as a blog superstar and envy me, which is really strange.

When I think about how many hours a day I sit in front of the PC, how much free time I spend and how many normal everyday problems I have as a family man and a person, then there is nothing sexy about it.

 

Of course there are moments when I pinch myself because I never expected the success of self-employed on the Internet. But the image that many have of successful bloggers and other successful web entrepreneurs is far too positive.

 

Why This Headline?

I am sorry if I have taken one or the other's motivation or at least slowed it down with this article.

But just as important as being motivated by success stories every now and then is not to lose sight of reality. Goals and visions are of course important, but daydreams and completely unrealistic expectations only lead to frustration and disappointment.

But if you are ready to recognize reality and face the challenge, you have a good chance of benefiting from the hard work and perseverance at some point.
