Create Shared Content With Pleasure - 100 Million Articles Show How - 100 million articles were examined carefully. The goal: to determine which factors encourage visitors to share on social networks. The US company BuzzSumo is behind the study. And although the figures refer to the USA, they are also relevant in Germany.

Briefly about the company behind the study. BuzzSumo operates an online tool that is used to examine content in relation to activities on social networks. This data can then be queried using a search mask. Enter "Hosting", "SEO", or "TYPO3" and you will get a list of thematically appropriate pages that were shared particularly often.

BuzzSumo worked with this data to determine similarities and thus important factors for content that is liked to be shared. Today we introduce you to the top 5.

Why Longer Articles are Better?

Small videos, pictures and quotes seem to be making the big round on the web. According to BuzzSumo's analyzes, however, it is the particularly detailed content that is often shared. Articles with 0-1000 words bring almost 50 percent fewer shares than articles with 3000 to 10,000 words.

In marketing, exactly the opposite is taught: visitors can disappear from your site with just one click, so keep the content concise and clear. However, such a strategy does not seem to bring about social sharing. What visitors want are detailed, well-researched and thoroughly worked out topics that can be read over a coffee. It is not without reason that detailed articles are preferred to shorter reports in Google News.

5,000 words seem impossible for article descriptions in an online shop. But even if products don't give that much, they still do advice on materials, quality factors and environmental protection.

Pictures As A Basic Sequence To Success

The phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words” can be found in pretty much every area - including shares. This was confirmed by BuzzSumo in the study. According to this, content with pictures is twice as likely to be shared on Twitter as it is without.

The contrast on Facebook is even stronger with thumbnails. Thumbnails triple the likelihood of shares and should therefore not be missing in any shared content.

What is unfortunately not clear in the study: How do several images compare to a few? There doesn't seem to be a general answer here, but a healthy and appropriate combination will probably be the key to success.

A page about colors inspires with many pictures, a page about spelling could distract from the actual topic.

Positive Emotions Encourage Sharing

An important part of the BuzzSumo study is devoted to the subject of feelings. For this purpose, the top 10,000 articles were divided into different categories with emotions. The final diagram shows that almost 70 percent of the content is related to either laughter, joy, entertainment or amazement.

BuzzSumo seeks the explanation in yet another study that asked people how they responded to content shared on the web. During this one found that users share in order to present themselves to others - naturally gladly in a positive way.

An article about amusing cat pictures would show the humor, an article about a sunset with a remarkable play of light would show the enthusiasm for nature and maybe photography. For other users, this could create the image of a person with a sense of humor and an interesting hobby.

Lists and Infographics are Welcome

Readers love structured content because the knowledge it contains can be better recognized. Lists provide an overview, but also prepared infographics. These show diagrams, developments and, expanded with small information boxes, important explanations at a glance.

The figures show that this is very popular with visitors. Even videos get 50 percent fewer shares.

The connection between infographics and long content is interesting. A combination of both (a long article with infographics to support it) could create an article that would spread widely on social media.

An interesting factor in the study shows that content with an about-me statement is sometimes shared 40 percent more often than without it. It is important for readers to understand who is behind elaborate graphics and codes.

This can be achieved with a short introduction at the beginning (especially recommended for guest articles) and a concluding, longer section that introduces the author in detail.

The top 5 factors for shared content leave the question open: How relevant are the US company's findings for Germany? In principle, it can be said that the numbers also play a major role here on site, which is evident from the many popular content from the USA in Germany.

The figures for social networks are now quite similar to those in Germany. Facebook clearly dominates, the rest remains below the 10 percent mark.

How important is well-shared content in social networks to you and with which types of content have you had good experiences so far?
